Mute are delighted to announce the reissue of The Graveyard and the Ballroom, the landmark 1980 debut from A Certain Ratio. This is one of four limited edition reissue pressings to commemorate the release of the new A Certain Ratio album ACR Loco. They will be available on limited edition white vinyl with black and white versions of the covers. The Graveyard and the Ballroom shows off A Certain Ratio’s legendary mix of angular, bass-heavy postpunk. Originally released in 1980 this album has been a collectors’ item ever since it’s initial release on cassette. A Certain Ratio was one of the first groups to sign to the legendary Factory Records in Manchester. Whilst many people credit New Order and The Happy Mondays as the groups who brought dance music into the sound of Manchester, it is in fact A Certain Ratio who were there in the beginning. Formed in 1978, the initial line-up comprised Simon Topping (vocals), Martin Moscrop (guitar and trumpet), Peter Terrell (tape loops) and Jeremy Kerr (bass). Their debut seven-inch “All Night Party” was Factory Records fifth release. Soon after this Donald Johnson joined on drums. Produced by Martin Hannett, The Graveyard and the Ballroom contains 14 tracks: 7 demo songs from a session recorded at Graveyard Studios in September 1979 and 7 songs from a gig at the Electric Ballroom in October 1979. The album captures A Certain Ratio at their best - raw, dark and funky and contains early versions of future classic tracks like “Do The Du” and “Flight”.
